Farm Safe Schools News
We are working towards our 1st Farm Safe Schools award this year, 2021 - 2022!
Here in Scoil Naomh Fursa we have been involved in the Farm Safe Schools Programme
for 2022. This is an initiative developed and promoted by Agri Aware, AgriKids
and the Irish Farmers Association (IFA)
to “engage, educate and empower Irish children to become farm safety ambassadors and in doing so help create a safer, brighter future on Irish farms.” (https://farmsafeschools.ie/about/index)
Pupils in Scoil Naomh Fursa have completed three modules from March to May 2022. To be accredited as a Farm Safe School our school must complete the required number of topics per module and submit evidence of completion. This page shows just some of the great work we did in each module and acts as our submission page to become accredited as a Farm Safe School, a Farm Safe Star School or a Farm Safe Superstar School! Fingers, hooves and paws crossed!
Module 1: Farmer, Farmyard & Field Safety
Junior and Senior Infants
Infants learned all about farm safety signs and about climbing and falling dangers.
First and Second Classes
First and Second Classes completed worksheets on slurry safety and learned about electrical safety during a webinar.
3rd Class
3rd Class appointed a Farm Safety Officer, designed Know the Signs
posters and wrote acrostic WELLNESS
poems.
4th and 5th Classes
4th and 5th Classes created a farm safety map, drew farm safety signs and completed electrical safety worksheets.
6th Class
6th Class enjoyed a lively discussion about the farm safety checklist, created electrical safety posters and worked on heights scenarios.
Module 2: Animal Safety & Care
Junior and Senior Infants
The infant room was very busy learning all about how animals communicate especially horses and dogs and cats.
First and Second Classes
Learning all about horse safety was top of the list in the First and Second room and we also completed animal care and wellbeing worksheets.
3rd Class
We loved learning all about animal safety and care and learned about horses, dogs and cats and lambs.
4th and 5th Classes
We found animal safety and care so interesting and we learned all about being safe around bulls, and horses and how to care for lambs.
6th Class
We learned about bull safety in the Spot the Dangers
game, we learned about zoonoses in the webinar pop quiz and we fed lovely lambs.
Module 3: Tractor & Machinery Safety
Junior and Senior Infants
We were busy learning about tractor rules and what to wear for a day of tractor work.
First and Second Classes
We learned all about the different machines used by farmers and about quad bike safety.
3rd Class
We had great fun learning about machines used by farmers, we played the Spot the Dangers game and we completed quad bike safety worksheets.
4th and 5th Classes
Learning about farm machinery was cool! We completed worksheets about machinery used on the farm, did a webinar pop quiz and played a tractor and machinery safety web game.
6th Class
We learned all about machines used by farmers, tractor rules and farm focus work.
Scoil Naomh Fursa
Scoil Naomh Fursa is a mixed school with five mainstream class teachers and two Special Education Teachers with a special ASD class opening in September 2024.
