Scoil Naomh Fursa

Green Flag

Here in Claran we have decided to do our bit to look after the environment, so we got involved in the Green-Schools programme. Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment.

During the last term we have to complete our cyclability audit (we had planned to carry this out in February but it fell victim to the bad weather). We are planning another big cycle event for the senior classes. We hope to go to Inchaquinn. We are going to provide cycle training for our Mammies and Daddies too! We will be taking part in National Walk to School Week in May and National Bike Week in June. We also hope to work along side the  Active Flag Committee to organise some bike and walking activities during Active Week 2015! Just a few events to keep us busy!

We have been awarded three Green Flags to date and are currently working towards our fourth. The theme for this flag is Transport.

Fluorescent Friday - 27/03/2015

We held our lastest Action Day on the day of the Easter holidays and what fun we had! We were the brightest school in Ireland! All roads leading to Scoil Naomh Fursa we awash with adults and children walking wearing highlighter colours!! Pinks, greens, oranges and yellows everywhere!Pupils also attached a green message to their outfits. These messages were related to any of the green flags we have achieved to date - litter, energy, water or transport.

Mammies and Daddies were then invited in for a cuppa and some goodies after they had a look at our projects which we displayed along the corridors and in the hall.

Junior classes worked on the road safety theme while senior classes worked on climate change and carbon footprints. The Green Schools Committee also ran competitions coming up to Fluorescent Friday. Junior and Senior Infants completed a Road Safety Colouring Competition, 1st and 2nd class had to design a Green T-shirt while the senior classes had to become engineers and design an eco-friendly mode of transport. It was a very busy day for us as our assessor, Tiarnan came to visit too. We warned him not to come withour his bright clothing and he didnt he disappoint!

We have submitted our application form and hope to hear in the coming weeks if we have been sucessful in getting our 4th flag.
