Scoil Naomh Fursa
Extra-curricular physical activity is encouraged in many ways in Claran. The children receive two yard breaks in the day. Sos or small break is 10 minutes and lón or lunch time is 30 minutes duration.
2. Physical Activity
Our yard has been zoned for different activities for different class groups.
Playground specific equipment has been purchased and is now stored in an area convenient to the yard.
We have introduced the idea of Physical Activity Leaders (PALS). The children from the senior classes lead physical activities on the school yard at break times.
Bizzy Breaks and Go Noodle
Do Your Talking as You Are Walking
Some classes partake in ‘Bizzy Breaks’ which are a variety of physical activity ideas from the Irish Heart Foundation. Other classes use GoNoodle. These movement breaks provide the children with short interactive brain breaks. This allows children toachieve more by keeping them engaged and motivated
throughout the day. Click on the image below to check out GooNoodle.
Run Around Europe Challenge
We have recently started our Run Around Europe Challenge.
This excellent initiative provides children with activity breaks during the day. Every child in the school takes part by running laps of the Astroturf or hall. Each lap of the Astroturf is worth 1km and two laps of the hall are worth 1km. We are trying to reach as many European capital cities as we can!
Annual Activity Events
Claran's Operation Transformation 2018
To keep us all fit, healthy and happy we have started Claran's Operation Transformation in school. Operation Transformation will continue until our mid-term break on Wednesday the 14th of February. We will be promoting physical activity and healthy eating. We ask that all children make a special effort to have a healthy lunch for the duration of the programme.
We have activities for each day of the week:
Monday: Move it Monday (each class will complete their own activities).
Tuesday: Active Agents.
Wednesday: Walk on Wednesday: 12:10 p.m. (Parents welcome).
Thursday: Active Agents.
Friday: Feel Fit Friday (each class will complete their own activities).
After break / lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays our Active Flag Committee will act as Active Agents and lead each class in 30 seconds of activities on the school yard or in the classroom. Each agent will have a different exercise and will move to next group after 30 seconds. Each class will complete eight different exercises.
For you at home why not take up the 21 day Walking Challenge – log on to

Friday September 29th 2017
Teachers in Claran like to keep active too.
The children challenged the teachers to see who is the fittest, the fastest, the strongest and the most competitive!
Today we enjoyed running, skipping, penalty shoot outs, basketball shots and lots more.
Take on the Teachers!
Run Teddy Run
Run Teddy Run is always a huge success with the junior end of the school!
Active Agents got everyone moving on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
As children line up at break and lunch times, they partake in the physical actvity of the day which is displayed on a classroom window.
Walk on Wednesday
Children from Junior Infants right up to Sixth Class, along with school staff, put on their hi-vis jackets every Wednesday to take part in our Walk on Wednesday. Sometimes parents join us.
Our school enjoys a variety of annual activity events from our Maths Week trails to our end of year summer cycles. We all enjoy the Halloween Parade. Christmas concerts allow the children to dance and Seachtain na Gaeilge brings a céilí too. We partake in our local St Patrick's Day parade and we also enjoy Easter Egg Hunts. Active Week is a firm favourite with pupils.
